Where we will be sailing - lake Traunsee
Sheer beauty. Lake Traunsee is situated in the upper-Austrian part of the region Salzkammergut. Here you are surrounded by high mountains and it seems as if heaven and earth are touching. This extraordinary scenery is the perfect setting for the EUROSAF European Para Inclusion Sailing Championships 2019.
On its Eastern shore, Austria´s deepest lake is very steep and inaccessible, while the Western shore is characterized by sweet meadows. The waters are incredibly clear and the lake is framed in a perfect way by wonderful landscape and pretty villages like a string of pearls. Gmunden, Altmünster, Traunkirchen and Ebensee are as well worth visiting than the lake itself.
For the participants at the European Championships there will be the sailors party in the romantic watercastle Schloss Orth. The prize awarding ceremony after the last race will take place at the beautiful clubhouse of the UYCT at Espalande with a beautiful view of the watercastle.
Who wants to take his time, can discover a lot more round lake Traunsee. A trip to Salzburg or onto the mountain Traunstein, to the most beautiful valley Almtal, to the manifold small galleries and regional shops and to the excellent restaurants really is worthwhile.
The Sailing Area
Lake Traunsee is a jewel for sailors and has an excellent reputation as top destination.
It is not only pleasing for the eye and the general sense of well-being but it is also one of Austria´s most challenging and manifold sailing areas.
The more ambitious climb up the almost 1700m of mountain Traunstein to study the winds in advance. During longer periods of warm weather special conditions arise: the phenomen of „Ober-“ and „Niederwind“ ( northerly and southerly winds) is a special feature of lake Traunsee – a regional counterpart to the famous wind "Ora" at Lake Garda in Italy; that is why sometimes Lake Traunsee is called "little Lake Garda".
Lake Traunsee is embedded between the distinctive mountain Traunstein, the mountain region Höllengebirge and Totes Gebirge - these high mountains and various valleys provide demanding wind - and sailing conditions. Even during stable high- pressure phases almost every day we have thermic winds of 3-4 Beaufort.
